HOW TO SAVE MONEY WHEN YOU BUY GROCERIES

Tips for Saving Money When You Buy Groceries
As the cost of fuel rises, so does the cost of groceries. Each week, it
seems, prices on both climb higher and higher while salaries remain
stagnant. There are several ways, though, to save money on food.
With the tips I list below, you’ll reap additional grocery savings and
free up some money for other things…like a weekend getaway with
the family.
1. Scan weekly store ads and compare prices. When I buy
groceries, I limit myself to one grocery store trip a week. It saves time
and money in gas. Most grocery store chains issue their sales flyers
on Wednesdays. That is the best time to start thinking about buying
groceries. Write down what items you need to buy for one week of
meals and then visit each of your local grocery chains online.
Compare sales to what items you need for the week to maximize your
savings when you buy groceries!
2. Buy store brand. I have saved countless dollars through
purchasing store brand products. Store brand foods taste good and
are marked down in price whenever the competitor brand is on sale.
For example, if Lucky Charms are on sale, you can bet that the store
brand version will be marked down, too! This method alone results in
major grocery savings! Contrary to popular belief, buying store brand
does not mean you are sacrificing on quality.
3. Read sales tags carefully. These days, most stores break down
the cost of each product to cents per ounce on price tags. It is crucial
to look at this information as you make an item selection! You might
see a bag of chocolate chips on sale for $2, while another is on sale
for $2.25. While $2 sounds like the better deal, it’s quite possible that
particular bag is smaller in size than the “more expensive” one. Do the
math. What’s a better deal: $2 for a 10 ounce bag of chocolate chips
($0.20 per ounce), or $2.25 for a 14 ounce bag ($0.16 per ounce)?
4. Buy one get one FREE. (Or buy one for 50% off.) Did you know
that you don’t have to buy two of an item to receive a buy one get one
free special? Let’s say you need two bags of carrots and they are on
sale buy one get one free. Well, shucks, there’s only one bag left for
sale! Fear not, most (if not all) store registers will automatically ring up
this one item at half off! After all, when you buy one and get one free,
you are getting each item at 50% off. This is also great to know if you
are living alone and just don’t need two of a product. Also, keep this in
mind for those tempting 10 for $10 sales. Do you really need 10
canisters of peanuts in one trip? Probably not. Buy what you need
and you will get the sale price of $1 per canister.
5. Grocery shopping trips can save you money on gas, too.
Many grocery stores have gas stations now, too. Sam’s Club, Wal-
Mart, and Kroger are some examples that come to mind. Some of
these stores may require that you have a frequent shopper card in
order to receive savings at the pump, but it is well worth the time to
sign up for one of these cards! Since you have to buy groceries
anyway, might as well save money at the pump in turn.
